Grades K-4 Overview

In grades K-4, students learn fundamental concepts about government, citizenship, geography, economics, and history. The focus of instruction is on developing an understanding of core democratic values, the rights and responsibilities of American citizens, and how key people and events contributed to the development of the American heritage. Exploration of cultural universals enables students to realize how the availability of resources, the changing environment, and innovation impact everyday life.

The kindergarten Social Studies curriculum focuses attention on an exploration of holidays, symbols, basic map skills, citizenship, family, and rules through digital and collaborative learning experiences.  Starting their educational foundation, kindergarteners will begin developing a new understanding of the topics.   

The Transitional Primary Social Studies curriculum focuses attention on an exploration of holidays, symbols, basic map skills, citizenship, family, and rules through digital and collaborative learning experiences. Building on their educational foundation from Kindergarten, students continue to develop a deeper understanding of the topics.   

The first grade Social Studies curriculum focuses attention on a deeper exploration of the life skills of fairness, cultures, customs, and voting through digital and collaborative learning experiences. Using the educational foundation laid in Kindergarten and/or Transitional Primary, students will develop a deeper understanding of the topics.   

The second grade Social Studies curriculum focuses attention on a deeper exploration of the basic foundation of the local, state and federal governments, goods and services and supply and demand through digital and collaborative learning experiences. Using the educational foundation laid in grades K-1 students will develop a deeper understanding of the topics.   

The third grade Social Studies curriculum focuses attention on a deeper exploration of immigration, folklore, national identity and culture through digital and collaborative learning experiences. Using the educational foundation laid in grades K-2 students will develop a deeper understanding of the topics.   

The fourth grade Social Studies curriculum focuses attention on a deeper exploration of economics, regions of the United States, and famous people, places and inventions from New Jersey through research, projects and hands-on technology based learning. Using the educational foundation laid in grades K-3 students will develop a deeper understanding of the topics.
